Arthel (Doc) Watson Endowed Scholarship for Traditional Mountain Music

To provide scholarship support for a full-time student who pursues studies in, or displays talent for traditional mountain music. It is the donors’ desire that preference should accrue to applicants who are native to Watauga County, North Carolina.

The Doc Watson Endowment for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University provides opportunities for Appalachian Music students to work with expert practitioners in the field, and it brings Appalachian musicians and scholars to our campus. Students are able to document, celebrate, and study the contributions of Appalachian musicians adding to a growing body of knowledge of the diverse musical traditions that intersect in Appalachia.
Doc Watson has shared his love of music with his community—at home and across the nation. The Doc Watson Endowment for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University celebrates that music and honors his contributions to the region. Doc has endorsed our fundraising efforts to preserve and enrich our musical heritage.
